Materials & tools you'll need
For the macrame hanger: Cotton or jute yarn · A sturdy wooden hoop (sized to your chosen pot) · Scissors · Tapestry needle · Optional: cords, beads, or tassels for advanced techniques
For the peperomia repotting: A pot with good drainage holes · Lightweight soil · Perlite · Eggshells (clean, for added nutrients) · Potted mix · A nail or hook for hanging
Step 1 — Wrap the yarn around the hoop
Start by knotting your cotton or jute yarn around the top of the wooden hoop to create a strong base for your plant hanger. Wrap the yarn around the hoop, alternating between over and under wraps, until you've covered the entire circumference in a pleasing, even pattern.
Step 2 — Tie the macrame knots
Once the hoop is fully wrapped, start creating knots using basic macrame techniques such as the lark's head knot, square knot, or spiral knot. This is a great place to experiment — try different patterns and combinations of knots until you land on a look you love.
Step 3 — Secure and trim the hanger
Lock in your knots using a tension knot or stitch-in-the-hole knot so everything stays put. Trim any excess yarn, leaving a few inches for hanging, then tie the yarn around the back of the hoop and tuck the ends inside the knots for a clean finish.
Step 4 — Prepare the new pot
Choose a pot with good drainage holes and fill it halfway with a mixture of lightweight soil, perlite, eggshells, and potted mix. The eggshells add extra nutrients for your peperomia plant — just make sure they're clean before use.
Step 5 — Remove the plant from its current container
Carefully turn the current pot upside down and tap gently around the edges to loosen the soil. Gently pull the peperomia plant out of its container, taking care not to damage the roots as you go.
Step 6 — Repot the plant
Place the peperomia plant in the centre of the new pot, making sure the top of the roots sits level with or slightly below the edge of the pot. Add more soil around the roots and gently press down to remove any air pockets.
Step 7 — Water the repotted plant
Gently water your newly repotted peperomia, being careful not to overwater it. Let any excess water drain freely from the bottom of the pot before moving the plant into its hanger.
Step 8 — Hang and position your plant
Slide the top of the hoop over a sturdy nail or hook, adjusting the length as needed to hang at your desired height, then carefully place the repotted peperomia inside the hanger. Choose a spot with bright but indirect sunlight, ideally at a temperature between 60-85°F (15-30°C), for your plant's new home.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use different materials for advanced techniques in crafting the macrame plant hanger?
Yes, you can experiment with additional materials like cords,
beads, or tassels to achieve more intricate patterns and designs
for your macrame plant hanger.
How do I care for a repotted peperomia plant?
Place the repotted peperomia plant in bright but indirect
sunlight, ideally between 60-85°F (15-30°C). Water sparingly,
allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Fertilize
every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer)
with a balanced houseplant fertilizer, and prune any dead or
yellowing leaves as needed to encourage new growth.
