Materials & tools you'll need
Bernat Crafters Cotton in white, approximately 3.5 oz (100g) · 4mm aluminum crochet hook · Scissors · Yarn needle · Crochet stitch holder (optional)
Step 1 — Crochet the sole base
Make a slipknot and chain 29 stitches. Work 9 rows of single crochet across the chain, but instead of inserting your hook into just the top front loop, insert it through both loops of each stitch. This variation creates a slightly denser fabric that holds its shape well for the sole and sides of the bootie. Fasten off and weave in the ends once all 9 rows are complete.
Step 2 — Shape the T-top
With the long strip laid flat, count in 7 stitches from one end along the top edge and attach a new strand of yarn into the 8th stitch. Chain 1 to secure it, then single crochet across a total of 16 stitches. Chain 1, turn, and repeat for 6 rows total. This builds up the raised T-shaped tongue that will fold over the top of the foot.
Step 3 — Whipstitch the sides together
Fold the strip in half and whipstitch the side edges together, sewing through two strands of yarn on each side for a secure seam. As you approach each corner, skip the very last stitch and angle your stitching slightly diagonally instead of sewing straight into the corner — this rounds out the toe and heel shaping rather than leaving a hard point.
Step 4 — Reinforce the corners
At the tightest points of the seam, stitch through the corner twice so that one loop wraps around each side, giving the corner extra strength and a cleaner rounded shape. Continue whipstitching up toward the T-top, but stop and leave the last few rows of the T-top unsewn — these rows are meant to fold over the top of the foot rather than be seamed shut.
Step 5 — Add the adjustable ankle tie
Make a slipknot and chain 50 stitches, then pull the yarn through the final loop and thread the tail onto a yarn needle. Starting where the T-top meets the sole, weave the tie in and out through the eyelets — the natural gaps between stitches — all the way around the opening of the bootie until you return to your starting point. Tie the ends into a small bow to finish, and adjust the tie snugger or looser around the baby's ankle as needed.
Frequently asked questions
What materials are needed for the easiest crochet baby booties tutorial?
You'll need a 4mm aluminum crochet hook, scissors, a yarn needle,
an optional crochet stitch holder, and about 3.5 oz (100g) of
Bernat Crafters Cotton in white for one pair of booties.
What size are the finished baby booties?
Each finished bootie measures approximately 8 inches by 5 inches,
though size can vary slightly depending on yarn and hook gauge.
This makes them a bit larger than newborn size, fitting babies
approximately three to six months old.
How do I adjust the ankle tie on the baby booties?
The ankle tie is a 50-chain length threaded through the eyelets
— the natural gaps between stitches — along the row where the
T-shaped top meets the sole. Simply pull the tie snugger or
looser around the baby's ankle and finish with a bow to hold
the desired fit.
