Materials & tools you'll need

3mm crochet hook · Weight 4 yarn (middle section) · Weight 3 yarn (center circle) · Weight 2 yarn (petals) · Scissors · Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Step 1 — Create the magic circle base

Begin with the yellow yarn for the base of the flower. To form the magic circle, hold the yarn tail in your fingers and wrap the working end over your fingers, come under from behind, cross in front, and insert your hook into the loop created. Grab the working yarn and pull it through. Pinch the section where the loop emerges and turn the work so you're viewing it as a row. Chain one — this counts as the first single crochet — then work five more single crochets into the big magic circle loop, inserting into the loop each time, yarning over, pulling up a loop, yarning over and pulling through both loops. Close the round by pulling the yarn tail firmly to tighten the circle, then join with a slip stitch into the first chain one. Cut the yarn leaving a tail to weave in, and switch to your next color.

Step 2 — Round 2: increase to 12 double crochets

Begin round 2 with a chain of two. Count your six single crochets from round 1, then work two double crochets into the first stitch — yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through two loops, then yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops to complete the first double crochet. Work a second double crochet into that same stitch. Continue working two double crochets into each of the six stitches all the way around, giving you 12 double crochets in total (11 true double crochets plus the chain two, which counts as the 12th). Place the last double crochet into the same stitch as the first to close the ring neatly, then join the round by slip stitching into the third double crochet from the bottom of the previous chain two. Weave in ends as needed.

Step 3 — Round 3: form the six petal points

Round 3 creates the six petal points that give the flower its shape. Chain three, then slip stitch into the top of the first double crochet from round 2. Skip one double crochet, then double crochet into the next one. Repeat this sequence — chain three, skip one double crochet, double crochet into the next — all the way around the circle until you have six evenly spaced petal points. For the final petal point, chain three and double crochet into the top of the last double crochet in round 2 to complete the set. Fasten off the yellow yarn, leaving a tail for weaving in, then switch to the weight 3 yarn for the center circle.

Step 4 — Round 4: center circle and middle section

To create the center circle, chain six with the weight 3 yarn and join with a slip stitch to form a ring. In the second chain from the joining point, work two double crochets. Skip one chain, then work two double crochets again. Repeat this pattern around the circle to complete the center circle. Fasten off the weight 3 yarn and switch to the weight 4 yarn for the middle section.

For the middle section, chain three, then slip stitch into the top of one of the double crochets on the center circle. Work two double crochets into that same stitch, skip one double crochet, then work two double crochets again. Repeat this pattern around the circle until the middle section is complete. Fasten off the weight 4 yarn and switch to the weight 2 yarn for the petals.

Step 5 — Round 5: complete the petals and finish

For the final round, chain three, then slip stitch into the top of one of the double crochets on the middle section. Work two double crochets into that same stitch, skip one double crochet, then work two double crochets. Repeat this pattern around the full circle to complete all the petals. The layered weight 2 yarn gives the outer petals a lighter, more delicate look compared to the inner sections, creating a natural, dimensional flower. Fasten off the weight 2 yarn leaving a tail, then use your yarn needle to weave all remaining ends securely through several stitches on the back of the flower. Trim close to the fabric and your six-petal flower is complete.

Frequently asked questions

How do I create a magic circle for a crochet six-petal flower?
Wrap the working yarn over your fingers, under from behind, and cross in front. Insert the hook into the loop, pull the working yarn through, then chain one and work five more single crochets into the big loop. Pull the tail to close the circle, then join with a slip stitch into the first chain one.

How many double crochets should I make in round 2?
Round 2 produces 12 double crochets total — work two double crochets into each of the six single crochets from round 1. The chain of two at the start counts as the 12th double crochet. Close the ring by placing the last double crochet into the same stitch as the first.

How do I form the petal points in round 3?
Chain three, then slip stitch into the top of the first double crochet from round 2. Skip one double crochet, double crochet into the next, and repeat — chain three, skip one, double crochet — all the way around until you have six petal points. Finish by chaining three and double crocheting into the top of the last double crochet in round 2.
