Size G/4.5mm crochet hook · Yarn in two colours (green and pink) · Scissors · Tapestry needle · Keychain or keyring

Step 1 — Make the chapstick holder body

Start with the green yarn. Chain 4 and join into a ring with a slip stitch. Work in the round: chain 3 (counts as a double crochet), then work 5 double crochets evenly around the ring. Join with a slip stitch into the top of the first double crochet to close the round. Repeat this round for a total of 6 rounds, building a small cylindrical tube in green.

On round 7, work the same double crochet sequence, then in the next stitch work a single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, single crochet sequence to begin shaping the transition between the holder body and the flower section. Finish the round with a slip stitch to join. Continue working in the green yarn for rounds 8 through 14, repeating the base double crochet pattern. On round 15, repeat the shaping sequence from round 7, then fasten off the green yarn by breaking it and pulling the tail through all loops.

Step 2 — Work the eyelets

Using the pink yarn, chain 20 stitches. Work 9 single crochets across the chain, inserting the hook into each eyelet space in turn. Join with a slip stitch into the top of the first single crochet and break the yarn. Chain 1, then work 6 double crochets evenly around the circle, joining again with a slip stitch into the top of the first double crochet. Break the yarn. Repeat this process to create 4 eyelets in total, weaving in the ends as you go. These eyelets will anchor the drawstring and give the holder its drawstring closure.

Switch to the pink yarn and continue with rounds 16 through 20: chain 3 (counts as double crochet), work 5 double crochets evenly around the ring, join with a slip stitch, then chain 2 and work 10 single crochets evenly around the ring. Join and break the yarn. Repeat for each of the 4 remaining rounds in pink, then on round 21 work the final double crochet round and fasten off.

Step 3 — Crochet the drawstring

Using the green yarn, start with a slip knot and chain 49 stitches (48 plus the starting chain). In the second chain from the hook, work a slip stitch, then a single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, half double crochet, and single crochet in sequence. This forms a small leaf shape at one end of the drawstring.

Work slip stitches along the chain until you are 5 stitches from the opposite end. At that point, work a single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, half double crochet, and single crochet to create a matching leaf at the other end. Finish with a chain stitch and pull the yarn through. Trim, weave in all ends. The finished drawstring has a leaf at each end and will thread through the eyelets to cinch the holder closed around a chapstick tube.

Step 4 — Add the keychain loop

Using the pink yarn remaining from the eyelets, insert the hook into one of the eyelet spaces and chain 1. Bring both yarn tails together and tie a knot to secure the base of the loop. Trim the tail, then yarn over one more time and pull the loop through, drawing it up firmly so it holds its shape. Weave the remaining tail through the chain from the opposite end to secure it. This loop is what you will pass a keyring through to attach the finished holder to your keys.

Step 5 — Finish and assemble

Thread a tapestry needle with any remaining pink yarn and weave in all loose ends through the eyelets and body of the holder. Attach a keychain or keyring to the loop created in step 4. Thread the green drawstring through the eyelets around the top of the holder, making sure a leaf end emerges on each side. Place a chapstick tube inside the holder, pull both drawstring ends to close, and tie them off.

If you would like a more open flower effect, fold the pink petals at the top of the holder outward and downward. The finished holder works equally well as a tampon holder or a small accessory pouch, and makes a charming handmade gift or craft fair item.
