Worsted weight yarn in a main colour — 1 skein · Worsted weight yarn in a contrast colour — 1 skein · Crochet hook size H or I (5.0 mm or 5.5 mm) · Stitch marker · Tapestry needle · Scissors

Step 1 — Work the foundation chain

Using your main colour yarn and the H or I hook, create a foundation chain of 15 stitches. This chain sets the width of the cozy and should wrap comfortably around the circumference of a standard 355ml (12 oz) can once the piece is seamed. Keep your tension even — a tight chain can make the first row difficult to work into and may cause the bottom edge of the cozy to pucker. If you tend to chain tightly, go up half a hook size for the foundation chain only, then return to your working hook for the rows. Place a stitch marker in the first chain to help identify the starting edge later.

Step 2 — Work the main colour body rows

Starting in the second chain from the hook, work a double crochet into each stitch across the foundation chain, then turn your work. For subsequent rows, chain 3 (this counts as your first double crochet), then double crochet into each stitch across and turn. Repeat this for a total of 5 rows in the main colour. Keep your stitch count consistent across every row — it is easy to accidentally crochet into the turning chain or miss the last stitch, which will cause the sides to slant. When all 5 rows are complete, fasten off the main colour and leave a tail for weaving in.

Step 3 — Add the contrast colour post stitch band

Join your contrast colour yarn and make a foundation chain of 2 stitches. Work across the row alternating front post double crochet (fpdc) and back post double crochet (bpdc): for fpdc, insert the hook from front to back between two stitches, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, and complete the double crochet as usual; for bpdc, insert the hook from back to front between two stitches and complete the double crochet in the same way. Alternate one fpdc and one bpdc across the full row, then turn. Repeat this alternating post stitch pattern for a total of 4 rows in the contrast colour. The raised post stitches create a ribbed texture that adds grip and visual interest to the finished cozy. Fasten off the contrast colour when all 4 rows are done.

Step 4 — Work the final main colour rows

Rejoin your main colour yarn. Chain 3, skip the first stitch, and double crochet across to the end of the row. Slip stitch into the top of the foundation chain to join the sides of the cozy into a tube. Chain 2 and turn. Work 3 more rows of double crochet — chain 3, double crochet across, turn — to build up the top section of the cozy and give it enough height to hold the can securely. When all 3 rows are complete, fasten off the main colour and leave a generous tail for seaming if any edges need closing.

Step 5 — Finish and weave in ends

Using the tapestry needle, weave all remaining yarn tails securely through the back loops of several neighbouring stitches in at least two directions before trimming close to the fabric. Check both the main colour and contrast colour joins to make sure no loose ends are showing on the right side of the work. Once all ends are woven in, insert a standard 355ml can to check the fit — the cozy should sit snugly around the can without gaping at the sides or pulling at the top edge. If you wish, you can optionally sew a decorative detail such as a small flower motif to the outside of the finished cozy before gifting or using it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work the colour change band with post stitches on the beer can cozy?
Switch to your contrast colour yarn and make a foundation chain of 2 stitches. Work across using front post double crochet (fpdc) and back post double crochet (bpdc) alternately — for fpdc insert the hook from front to back between two stitches and complete a double crochet; for bpdc insert from back to front and complete the same way. Repeat this alternating pattern for 4 rows total, then fasten off the contrast colour.

What size can does the double crochet beer can cozy fit?
The cozy is sized to fit a standard 355ml (12 oz) beer or soda can. The 15-stitch foundation chain worked in worsted weight yarn on an H or I hook produces a width suited to the standard can diameter. Adjust your hook size slightly if your tension runs tight or loose.

How do I finish the double crochet beer can cozy?
Return to your main colour yarn, chain 3, skip the first stitch, and double crochet across. Slip stitch into the top of the foundation chain to join the cozy into a tube, then chain 2 and turn. Work 3 more rows of double crochet, fasten off, and weave all loose ends in securely with a tapestry needle.
