Hello! My name is Laura, and I am a Canadian Maker, based in Toronto Ontario.
I love to sew, crochet, embroider, draw, design, invent, and eat. I began sewing when I was very young, with my Grandmother Patricia being my most dominant inspiration. That woman could make ANYTHING. She would knit all of our Christmas sweaters, sew our dresses for weddings, make our Halloween costumes, and anything else under the sun. She called me her “little Sugarplum” and took me under her wing, teaching me the basics of sewing.
Then we lost her. In 1998, my family lost its matriarch to complications from diabetes.
But I didn’t stop sewing.
When I attended the University of Ottawa, I realized that my “creative” mind was tied to my ADHD. I have a difficult time sitting still, and my mind goes a mile a minute. Aside from the helping hand of Coffee and Adderall, I found sewing to be a great “mind quieter”. I had already found the one thing that I could do for hours with no fidgeting, but in University, I made a business from it.
In the summer of 2012, I applied to be a vendor at the ByWard Market In Ottawa. I registered my business, made a business plan, got a grant, and began selling my handmade tote bags under a 10×10 tent, every day in the summer.
In honor of my grandmother, I named my company Sugarplum Originals.
Lately, I have been more inspired by the way in which my ADHD has lead me to a more creative and fulfilling life than I think I would have had without it, and so I have rebranded as Last Minute Laura (the name by which I am most frequently called).
My business is still a Sugarplum Originals Production, as it always will be, but these items are more Last Minute Laura.
